Epic Shining Wisdom

Epic Shining Wisdom is a remake of the classic Sega Saturn game, adapted from an action rpg to a tactical rpg like the other Shining Force games, using the Game Maker 2 engine. The concept is very simple: What would happen if instead of just Kazin and Sarah being sent by Granseal to help Mars, they sent the Caravan full of the heroes from Shining Force 2? Thus, Mars can recruit the beloved heroes of Granseal while fighting alongside Wisdom characters like Princess Satera and Gudo Fairy.

  • Will the story be the same?
    A: The story remains untouched but is told in greater detail, using the best available translations and information from extra materials such as guides and books. Some adaptations are made, but nothing that changes the center of the story. The 2 main differences will be the caravan coming together with Sarah and Kazin and the creation of a custom character.
  • And about the graphics? Wisdom has some outdated prerendered graphics.
    A: The graphics are inspired by the Sega Saturn, like the maps, portraits and colors, while the pre-rendered sprites (which haven’t aged so well) are replaced with beautiful original pixel art inspired by the style of Shining Soul and made by the talented artist Claire Starsword. And of course we will have the incredible original soundtrack. The cast of SF2 will get new portraits and exclusive sprites.
  • Will the gameplay be the same as the force games?
    A: Yes, but will have some new twists borrowed from Shining Force 3, like using special attacks, multiple weapons and forging with multiple materials.
  • You said custom character? Please explain.
    A: While Mars still is the hero of the game, the role of “the silent protagonist” will be yours! At the start of the game you will create a character in the same vein of Shining Soul, choosing a class and a pallette. This character will be a childhood friend of Mars.
  • I’m curious, why adapting such an obscure and underrated game?
    A: I have 2 goals doing this hard work adaptation. My secondary goal is to provide a way fans can experience the shining wisdom story and soundtrack without the need to suffer the button mashing experience of the original. My primary goal is to try to recreate my experience of playing Shining Force 2 for the first time: The sense of adventure, the unknown story and dangers, the marvelous characters, the secrets.
  • Do you plan to adapt others shining games?
    A: Yes, after Wisdom is complete, my plan is to remake Shining Force 1 and 2.
